So many people I know are living life on a wheel. Think of your favorite pet rodent and you get the picture…
They wake up, they eat or drink something, and they crawl on the wheel and spin until it is time to go home and do the reverse.
They do this for a number of reasons:
- It is all they know
- It is what is expected
- It is what everyone does
- It is what has to be done to pay the bills
- They enjoy it (really????)
I am not here to suggest that life is the same for all or that getting on the wheel is wrong. Sometimes it is damned necessary. BUT… we only get one go at this life now and soon it will be time to sit back and reflect on it.
Did you do the things you love enough?
Did you spend enough time with those you love and value?
Did you make a difference?
I watched both of my parents grapple with this reality as they got older and I know that they struggled with it. The old way they lived by was to work hard and retire…and then you could have freedom. But that way no longer exists, and we have to forage new ground and make new rules.
I don’t have the answers, but I do know that I want to make sure I can answer yes to every one of those questions. To do that I have to continue to take risks and play by my own set of rules that don’t necessarily align with those of my friends and family.
